Frequently Asked Questions

Crane operators lift and place loads using mobile, tower, crawler or vehicle-loading cranes. Work includes planning lifts with riggers and doggers, conducting pre-start inspections, positioning cranes safely, executing lifts to hand signals or radio direction and completing logbooks.

Crane operation requires high risk work licences matched to crane type and capacity, such as C2, C6, C1 and CO for mobile slewing cranes or CT for tower cranes. Most operators also hold dogging or rigging tickets and a White Card.

Many operators begin as doggers or riggers on crane crews, learning lifting operations before gaining operator licences. Crane hire companies and traffic-controlled taxi crane work provide early seats, with capacity and complexity increasing as experience and licences build.

Construction leads demand across residential towers, commercial projects and infrastructure, followed by mining, ports, energy including wind farm erection, and manufacturing. Crane hire companies serve all sectors, while major contractors employ operators directly on long programs. Wind farm construction is creating strong new operator demand.

Operators progress to larger and more complex cranes, crane crew supervision and lift planning roles. Pathways continue into crane coordination on major projects, operations management with hire companies, and appointed person or engineering-adjacent lift planning specialisations. Safety records and versatility drive progression at every stage.
