About the role...

A unique opportunity for an adaptive and dynamic WHS Manager to join our team, reporting to our General Manager of HR, at the Royal Agricultural Society.

As the RAS’s WHS Manager you will enhance and promote our culture of safety and psycho-social well-being excellence across all aspects of business. You will provide leadership and support for all health, safety and workers’ compensation-related initiatives within the RAS’s high-risk operational and corporate teams.

This role requires both a strategic and hands-on approach to coordinating, managing, evaluating, and monitoring safety and risk at the RAS.

Key responsibilities within this role include but are not limited to: 

  • Manage the deployment of the Risk and Safety Management System specific to the RAS (A Safe Show For Everyone - ASSFE).
  • Stay up-to-date and comply with Australian Standards, Statutory Codes, Regulations, and Laws ensure that RAS is compliant at all times.
  • Lead and monitor the Workers Compensation matters from inception to completion for RAS
  • Use change management practices to enhance safety culture
  • Lead safety risk assessments and prepare the Risk Register.
  • Maintain first aid supplies and facilities per legislative requirements.
  • Assist in reviewing the RAS Emergency Management Plan, WHS Policies, and Procedures with key staff.
  • Identify and address areas of concern for RAS and third-party event risk assessments.
  • Manage the RAS Induction system and deliver onboarding training to new staff.
  • Report and investigate incidents, injuries, and hazards.
  • Liaise with SafeWork NSW for reporting notifiable incidents and act as the main liaison with SafeWork investigators during the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
  • Participate in the WHS committee and report on incident trends every two months and provide updates on Compensation and Return to work claims for the board
  • Identify and coordinate training needs of permanent, casual, and contract security staff to meet statutory and operational objectives, including WHS, security, emergency evacuation, and fire safety.
  • Maintain, coordinate, and implement first aid, fire safety, and emergency management plans for events.
  • Coordinate and implement the RAS Emergency Management Plan and perform roles (deputy warden, area warden) during emergencies as required.

About you…

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualifications in Work Health and Safety (WHS) or equivalent education
  • Senior First Aid certification
  • ISO 31000 Lead Risk Management

Experience

  • Extensive experience in a WHS role, with a focus on high-risk work environments such as maintenance, heavy construction, or ride/attraction safety.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Work Health and Safety and Workers Compensation Acts
  • Thorough understanding of the industry standards and regulations.
  • Understanding animal interactions would be preferable.
  • Proven track record in incident investigation, risk management, and compliance within a high-activity environment.
  • Experience in injury management and return to work programs
  • Strong understanding of NSW WHS legislation, codes of practice, and standards, particularly in high-risk work scenarios.
  • Proficiency in conducting WHS audits, preparing safety reports, and delivering detailed risk assessments.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting WHS audits and operational reviews, with the ability to develop improvement plans and drive continuous safety enhancements.
  • A proactive and solutions-focused mindset, with the ability to independently manage competing priorities and drive WHS initiatives in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to coach and influence supervisors and managers to embed effective risk management practices.
  • Proven ability to perform under pressure, managing tight deadlines, challenging circumstances, and high workloads while maintaining professionalism and delivering outcomes.
