Who we are 
Environmental Permitting and Compliance Division provides effective regulation and enforcement of laws to protect and sustainably manage our land, water, air, wildlife and heritage, supporting environmental stewardship for the benefit of Australian and international communities.

The Wildlife, Waste and Environmental Permitting Branch delivers government priorities across a number of sections to regulate waste exports, hazardous waste, the national television and computer recycling scheme, air quality emission standards, environmental contamination, sea dumping and wildlife trade. We work to conserve, protect and sustainably manage our environment for the benefit of the Australian and international community.

The Wildlife Trade Regulation Section administers the regulation of international wildlife trade in native and Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) listed species of flora and fauna, including assessment of import/export permit applications. Acts as the CITES Management Authority of Australia. The Waste Exports Sections regulate the export of waste glass, plastic, tyres and paper & cardboard. This includes assessing applications for licences, exemptions, variations, and renewals, leading industry engagement and communication on the regulation of waste exports, compliance monitoring, audit, data analysis, evaluation and regulatory uplift activities.

The key duties of the position include:

The department is seeking APS4 level Permit Assessment Officers for the Wildlife Trade Regulation Section and APS4 level Assessment and Compliance Monitoring Officers for the Export Waste Sections.

Duties include:

  • short research and assessment tasks, problem solving and providing high quality analysis and advice
  • for some roles, preparing regulatory decision briefs and other written documents including responding to correspondence
  • for some roles, assisting with a range of monitoring and audit functions and undertaking compliance history checks
  • providing information and advice to stakeholders and assisting them with their applications to meet regulatory requirements.

We have flexible work arrangements, but some roles operate in a unique operational environment where officers are required to be present in the Canberra office several days a week to meet operational requirements. Other roles may offer flexible work arrangements including working from regional areas across Australia.

Eligibility

Citizenship - to be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen.

Security Clearance - this position requires a Baseline Vetting security clearance. You will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level. 

Pre-employment checks - your suitability for employment will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process. This process includes a requirement to undergo and satisfy a National Police Check, referee checks, character clearance and where required a pre-employment medical assessment, specified mandatory qualification(s) validation and a probation period.
