The Metal Machinist (First Class) is responsible for the setup, operation, and maintenance of a variety of CNC and conventional machine tools to produce precision components. This role requires a strong understanding of machining processes, technical drawings, and measurement tools to ensure parts meet exact specifications. The machinist will also be involved in diagnosing equipment issues, advising on material use, and contributing to efficient and high-quality manufacturing operations.

Task & responsibilities

Duties:

  • Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and Vernier calipers.
  • Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as CNC and conventional lathes, CNC and conventional milling machines, shapers and grinders.
  • Measure, examine, and test completed units to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate all basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools to perform precision machining operations.
  • Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines.
  • Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.
  • Lay out, measure, and mark metal stock to display placement of cuts.
  • Select appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation for machinery work.

Responsibilities:

  • Read and interpret blueprints, samples, and engineering drawings to plan machining methods and sequences.
  • Diagnose machine malfunctions through observation and sound, and make appropriate adjustments or repairs.
  • Provide expert advice on material choices for client projects.
  • Deliver high-quality machined parts on time and to client expectations.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organised workspace in line with company standards.
  • Ensure all work meets Via Sun's standards for durability, reliability, and customer satisfaction.

Qualification & experience

  • Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade (or equivalent qualification).
  • Minimum of 1 year of full-time experience as a Metal Machinist or in a similar role.
  • Skilled in operating CNC and conventional lathes, milling machines, grinders, and shapers.
  • Experience with Siemens or Fagor control systems is preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret detailed technical drawings and plans.
  • Strong proficiency in measurement tools and methods for precision machining.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and mechanical aptitude.
  • Excellent attention to detail with a focus on quality and safety.
  • Clear communication skills, with the ability to advise on materials and processes.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic team environment.
