The successful candidate will be responsible for disassembly, evaluation and planning repairs of hydraulically powered machines and components. Typically, earth moving equipment, special purpose vehicles, cranes, EWP's, hydraulic power units, pumps, valves and cylinders will be worked on. The necessary information will be sourced and parts ordered. Reassembly and testing are then to be carried out. Occasional customer service will be required and may involve assembling hoses, identifying and supplying fittings, gauges and other hydraulic accessories. Certain parts will need be produced in the machine shop which requires knowledge of materials and the ability to operate a manual lathe and mill. Repairs may also involve basic fabrication/welding. A certain portion of the work will be on pneumatic or purely mechanical devices and systems. Workshop upkeep and improvement are ongoing tasks. Work at remote mine sites is frequent and generally involves programmed maintenance, troubleshooting, job scoping, upgrades, breakdown response and other duties of similar nature. Equipment such as mobile plant, drive systems, lubrication sets, large drills and processing plant are the sort of items tended to. New installations of piping and product management systems, for example, are also often carried out.

The standard workshop workweek is 38 hours with plenty of optional overtime paid at time-and-a-half for the first 3 hours and double-time thereafter. Sunday work in the workshop is always paid at doubletime. Remote site work is based around a 12-hour workday and is paid at 1.7 times the workshop rate or higher for unplanned or higher risk work. Travel time is paid at site rates. While working away from home, accommodation and meals are provided.
