Position Description - Economic Development Coordinator

Purpose

The role of Economic Development Coordinator forms part of Council’s Economic
Development Unit and will contribute to achieving the objectives of Council’s economic
development objectives found under the Community Pillar.

The position is responsible for the design and delivery of a wide variety of business specific
programs, events and services. Through engagement with the local business community, the
position will ensure that there are appropriate business services delivered to local small and
medium sized businesses, entrepreneurs and the general community.

This role will provide opportunities to collaborate, demonstrate innovation in a positive and
energetic team to inform the delivery of initiatives in the “Business, Growth and Engagement
Plan”.

This role requires demonstrated experience and ability in project management and will
oversee quality control through innovation and risk management strategies.

Strong marketing and communication skills, and ability to build and maintain solid
relationships (with internal and external) stakeholders will be vital to this role.

and efficiently in the scope of your daily work.

Key Deliverables

  • Business Engagement & Support – Establish and maintain relationships with local
businesses, providing resources, and networking opportunities.
  • Investment Attraction – Identify and promote investment opportunities, facilitating
connections between investors, businesses, and local government.
  • Economic Research & Data Analysis – Collect and analyse economic data to inform
decision-making, including industry trends, workforce needs, and regional
competitiveness.
  • Program & Project Management – Develop, implement, and manage economic
development programs and projects, ensuring they align with strategic priorities and
deliver measurable outcomes.
  • Grants & Funding Opportunities – Identify and apply for grants or funding programs
that support economic development initiatives.
  • Small Business & Entrepreneur Support – Develop programs or initiatives that assist
start-ups and small businesses in accessing resources, training, and mentorship.
  • Workforce Development & Training – Collaborate with industry and education
providers to address skills gaps and create job opportunities.

  • Placemaking, Activation & Event Support – Drive activation of key precincts, support
event organisers, and facilitate vibrant public spaces that enhance economic and
community outcomes.
  • Marketing & Promotion – Promote the local economy, investment opportunities, and
business success stories through digital platforms, events, and partnerships.
  • Stakeholder & Government Relations – Work with internal and external stakeholders,
including council, chambers of commerce, RDAs, and state/federal agencies, to drive
economic outcomes.
  • All other duties as required.

Person Specification

Essential criteria

  • Relevant Tertiary Qualification – Degree in Economics, Business, Marketing, Tourism,
or Urban Planning (or a related field).
  • Project & Program Management – Proven ability to develop, manage, and deliver
support programs and projects within budget and time constraints.
  • Stakeholder Engagement & Relationship Management – Experience working with
businesses, industry groups, community organisations, and/or government agencies.
  • Event & Activation Support – Experience in supporting events, coordinating
placemaking initiatives, or driving precinct activation to boost economic activity.
  • Strong Communication & Advocacy Skills – Ability to communicate effectively with
diverse stakeholders, including business owners, government officials, and
community groups.
  • Marketing & Promotion Skills – Experience in marketing, branding, or digital
engagement to promote local economic initiatives, investment opportunities, and
local activation.
  • Problem Solving & Innovation – Capacity to identify challenges, develop solutions, and
think creatively to support business and economic growth.
  • Ability to Work Independently & in Teams – A proactive and self-motivated approach
with the ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment.
  • High Level of Organisation & Time Management – Ability to manage multiple projects,
prioritise work, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Desirable criteria

  • Australian Certified Economic Developer (ACEcD) Accreditation – Recognition from
Economic Development Australia (EDA) as a certified economic development
professional.
  • Experience in Investment Attraction – Direct experience in attracting new businesses,
facilitating investment opportunities, or working on major economic development
projects.
  • Tourism Development Experience – Experience in tourism marketing, visitor
attraction strategies, or destination branding.
  • Grants & Funding Expertise – Experience identifying, applying for, and managing
government grants or external funding opportunities.
  • Smart Cities & Innovation Experience – Understanding of emerging smart city
technologies, digital infrastructure, IoT applications, and data-driven economic
development initiatives.
  • Knowledge of Local Economic Trends & Business Sectors – Understanding of key
industries, employment trends, and business challenges within the local economy.
  • Experience in Digital Marketing– Skills in social media management, website content
creation, email marketing, and campaign execution.
  • Graphic Design & Desktop Publishing Skills – Experience using Canva, Adobe Suite
(Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), or other graphic design tools to create marketing
materials.
  • Email Marketing & CRM Experience – Familiarity with email marketing platforms to
engage businesses and promote economic development initiatives.
  • Experience Working in Local Government – Understanding of council operations,
policies, and governance structures.

Standard conditions

  • Satisfactory completion of a National Police Clearance (will be arranged by the City of
Marion)
  • Satisfactory completion of applicable Medical Assessment (will be arranged by the
City of Marion)
  • Must be either an Australian resident or possess the legal right to work in Australia,
with the ability to provide documentation of a valid work visa.
  • Comply with existing Work, Health and Safety legislation and regulation obligations and
apply “Think Safe Live Well” philosophy.
  • Embrace ethical and moral behavior and report any suspected instances of fraud
and/or corruption in accordance with Fraud and Corruption Management and the
