The position is for an experience Deck Hand to work for RJW Friend Fishing, an established fishing boat based in Lakes Entrance in Victoria. Duties are those of a Deck Hand:

  • Manage ropes and mooring equipment during berthing / unberthing procedures
  • Perform lookout watches and communicate vessel’s course as directed
  • Conduct routine checks and maintenance on deck equipment including ropes, nets, rigging gear as well as lifesaving and firefighting apparatus
  • Perform routine maintenance and checks
  • Attach gear and fasten towing cables to nets
  • Operate rigging gear as well as deploying hooks and line and then retrieving fish
  • Remove catch from hooks, sort, clean, preserve, stow and refrigerate
  • Assist with offloading cargo using onboard equipment
  • Mend, make and repair fishing gear
  • Mend, make and repair fishing gear

 Candidates must have at least two years of relevant work experience working as a Fishing Hand overseas or one year of Australian work experience as a fishing hand.   The work experience must be evidenced by a signed sea service record or logbook and employment references will be needed. 

Crew members must have at least one or two years of relevant work experience and hold appropriate registration and / or licensing where required. 

The applicant must have a recent First Aid Certificate or commit to obtaining one. The candidate must hold safety and rescue certificates compliant with the International Conventions on Standards, Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers 1978. 

Depending on the conditions, crew members may be away from home for several days, sometimes a week, and there is usually only a short turnaround before heading back out to sea.
