Frequently Asked Questions

An EP, or accredited exercise physiologist, designs and delivers exercise-based treatment for people with chronic conditions, injuries or disability. Work includes conducting assessments, prescribing tailored exercise programs, monitoring progress and safety, and working alongside doctors, physiotherapists and other allied health professionals.

You need an accredited Bachelor or Master of Exercise Physiology and accreditation with Exercise and Sports Science Australia as an Accredited Exercise Physiologist. Programs combine coursework with substantial supervised clinical placements across hospital, clinic and community settings before graduation.

EPs specialise in exercise as medicine for chronic disease and disability management, often over longer treatment programs. Physiotherapists focus more broadly on manual therapy, injury rehabilitation and movement dysfunction. Many patients see both professionals as part of a coordinated care team.

Private clinics, hospitals, NDIS providers, aged care facilities, workplace health programs and community health services all employ EPs. Medicare and NDIS funding has expanded access to exercise physiology services significantly, growing demand for qualified EPs across metropolitan and regional Australia.

EPs progress to senior clinician and clinic management roles, or specialise in areas like cardiac rehabilitation, cancer care or NDIS disability support. Practice ownership offers an independent, flexible pathway, while others pursue research or academic roles in exercise science.
