Assistants typically support qualified educators without full independent responsibility for a room, often while completing their Certificate III. Educators hold recognised qualifications and take primary responsibility for planning and delivering the educational program within regulatory ratios. Both roles work closely together to deliver a strong educational program.

Long day care centres, preschools, outside school hours care services and family day care educators all employ assistants. Demand remains strong given growing enrolment and regulated educator-to-child ratios across the sector, with many services actively supporting staff through their qualifications.

Assistants progress to qualified educator roles upon completing their Certificate III, then toward diploma-qualified educator, room leader and centre director positions with further study. The sector offers a clear, supported pathway from entry-level assistant through to service leadership.
