Computational chemists use simulation and modelling to predict how molecules behave. Work includes molecular dynamics and quantum chemistry calculations, virtual screening for drug discovery, materials property prediction, developing models and code, and guiding laboratory experiments towards the most promising candidates.
A PhD in computational or theoretical chemistry is standard for research roles, with strong skills in quantum chemistry software, molecular dynamics packages and programming. Masters graduates with solid modelling and coding experience can enter industry and support scientist positions.
Universities and CSIRO host the largest concentration of roles, spanning drug design, catalysis, energy materials and batteries. Pharmaceutical and biotech companies, mining and materials firms, and national computing facilities also hire, and machine learning growth is expanding industry demand.
Machine learning now accelerates property prediction, force field development and molecule generation, making it a core skill alongside traditional simulation. Employers increasingly seek chemists who combine quantum chemistry foundations with Python-based machine learning, opening roles in both research and industry.
Research pathways progress from postdoc to senior researcher and group leader. Industry pathways lead to senior and principal scientist roles in drug discovery or materials. The programming and modelling skill set also transfers readily into data science and scientific software careers.
