MELBOURNE METAL MORWELL is looking for a hardworking and trade-qualified individual to join our team at Hazelwood North as a permanent full-time Welder.

The successful applicant will be offered a salary of $76,000 to $80,000 per annum plus superannuation, based on experience and relevant qualifications.

Melbourne Metal Morwell is the Gippsland branch of Melbourne Metal Recycling, one of Victoria’s largest independently owned and operated scrap metal recyclers. Located at 10 Groppi Road, Hazelwood North, our Morwell facility serves the broader Latrobe Valley region, handling a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals including steel, aluminium, copper, brass, stainless steel, and lead. We provide commercial and industrial collection services, bin and truck services, and old car removals, supported by trade-approved weighbridge technology and a commitment to responsible and efficient metal processing. As our operations continue to grow, we are building a skilled team to support the maintenance, repair, and fabrication needs that keep our facility running at its best.

As a Welder, your tasks include:

  • Studying technical drawings, blueprints, and client specifications to plan and execute the fabrication and modification of custom metal products, steel bins, skips, and structural components from raw recycled metal stock

  • Repairing and restoring metal recycling bins, skips, and related equipment by identifying damage sourcing appropriate materials, and carrying out fabrication and welding work to return items to full operational condition

  • Welding cracked, damaged, and worn metal components back to serviceable condition, adding material value by transforming scrap and recycled metals into repaired or newly fabricated products

  • Performing routine and reactive maintenance on recycling machinery, equipment, and facility structures, including shaping and forming metal sections and pipes using hand and machine tools, heat, and hammering as required

  • Selecting, cleaning, and preparing metal stock prior to fabrication, and accurately aligning and securing components using hand tools and measuring instruments to ensure dimensional accuracy before welding

  • Applying MIG, stick, TIG, and other welding techniques safely and efficiently to join metal sections, with bolting and riveting used where the application demands an alternative fastening method

  • Cutting metal sections and components to required dimensions using hand tools, flame-cutting torches, and mechanical cutting equipment, and inspecting completed welds to confirm bead width, penetration depth, and overall precision meet required quality standards

  • Finishing fabricated and repaired metal products by cleaning, filing, polishing, and where applicable treating surfaces with appropriate chemical solutions to achieve the required finish

  • Smoothing and refining weld joints using files, chisels, and grinding equipment to produce clean, structurally sound, and visually consistent results across all repair and fabrication work

Requirements:

  • Holds the relevant trade qualifications in welding or a related fabrication discipline.

  • Proven hands-on experience in welding and metal fabrication, including working with a variety of ferrous and non-ferrous metals such as steel, aluminium, stainless steel, and copper

  • Proficiency across multiple welding techniques (MIG, TIG, and arc), with the ability to read and interpret technical drawings and work to precise tolerances and quality standards

  • Good communication skills and the ability to work reliably as part of a team, take direction from supervisors, and coordinate effectively with other staff across the Hazelwood North facility

  • Sound understanding of workplace health and safety obligations, including safe handling of welding equipment, personal protective equipment requirements, and compliance with relevant Victorian OH&S standards

Melbourne Metal Morwell is part of a well-established and growing recycling operation that plays an important role in the Latrobe Valley community and the broader Victorian metal recycling industry. We run a well-equipped, safety-focused facility and take pride in the quality and reliability of our team. As we continue to expand our operations, we are looking for skilled tradespeople who want to be part of a business that values hard work, practical expertise, and a job done right.

If you are a qualified and experienced Welder who takes pride in your craft and is looking to apply your skills in a dynamic recycling and metal processing environment, we encourage you to apply.
