At Somerville House, we empower students to be architects of their futures. As a leading day and boarding school for girls, we are proud of our strong academic tradition and even prouder of the confident, capable and compassionate young women we support through their learning journey.

We are seeking an outstanding and passionate Teacher of Humanities to join our team for Semester 2, 2026 – commencing 13 July 2026.

Why Join Us?

Somerville House is a vibrant, future-focused school located in the heart of Brisbane, offering outstanding education from Pre-Prep to Year 12. Our students thrive in a dynamic learning environment where academic care, wellbeing and opportunity sit at the centre of all we do.

Somerville House is a school where innovation and tradition go hand in hand. With a strong record of academic achievement and a clear commitment to future-focused learning, we offer a dynamic environment where educators are supported to grow, contribute and thrive.

With the introduction of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), students can now pursue either the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) or the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) — reflecting our commitment to meaningful choice and academic excellence. While involvement in the IBDP is not a requirement for this role, we actively support staff who are interested in professional learning across both pathways.

The Role
This is a fixed-term, full-time position, commencing 13 July 2026 for Semester 2 only. This role offers the opportunity to work with Middle Years students, building strong foundations and a deep appreciation for Humanities.

The successful applicant will:

  • Have expertise in teaching Humanities across Years 7-9, with a strong understanding of the Australian Curriculum and relevant QCAA requirements.

  • Demonstrate confidence in teaching interdisciplinary Humanities programs, with the ability to teach Year 9 Big History considered a distinct advantage. This includes supporting students to explore big-picture historical thinking, inquiry, evidence, chronology, causation, change, continuity and connections across time.

  • Value innovation, collaboration and ongoing professional growth.

  • Understand the importance of positive relationships in creating effective, engaging and inclusive learning environments.

  • Hold current Queensland College of Teacher registration and relevant tertiary qualifications.

What We Offer

At Somerville House, staff are part of a high-performing academic community where excellence is pursued with care, purpose and professionalism.

  • A strong academic team committed to exceptional teaching, learning and student outcomes. A warm, collegial staff culture, underpinned by the Somerville House Culture of Care framework.

  • A genuine commitment to professional learning and growth, including investment in IBDP training for interested staff as we continue to strengthen our dual QCE-IBDP pathway.

  • A school community where staff and students are known, supported and encouraged to thrive.

  • The opportunity to contribute to a forward-thinking learning environment that values innovation, collaboration and professional expertise.

Somerville House is committed to the safety, protection and wellbeing of all children in our care, and we expect our staff to uphold the highest standards of child safeguarding.
