About the program
AIR6500 is the RAAF’s $3 billion program to develop a joint air battle management system that builds on the capabilities offered by Next Generation sensor and command and control systems. AIR6500 will create a fully networked ‘system of systems’ that synchronises air and missile defence operations in joint and coalition environments, maximising situational awareness and enhancing the speed of decision making across the battlespace.

About the role

Take your career to new heights with Lockheed Martin Australia as a System Safety Engineer on the AIR6500 T2B FADS program, a next-generation defence capability that will transform Australia’s air and missile defence. In this key role, you'll help shape system safety outcomes across complex and critical technologies.

What you’ll do
Working under the guidance of the System Safety Lead, you will:

  • Assess system designs and procedures to ensure safety requirements are well defined and maintained

  • Conduct hazard analyses and safety risk assessments independently

  • Develop technical documentation to support system certification and test readiness

  • Collaborate closely with subject matter experts across engineering disciplines, including ILS, HSI, software, and cyber

  • Contribute to technical investigations, planning, scheduling, and estimation of safety engineering tasks

This role offers location flexibility and can be performed from either Adelaide, Canberra, Melbourne or Newcastle.

 

What you bring
We’re looking for someone with a sharp analytical mindset and a collaborative approach. Ideally, you will have: 

  • Strong experience in System Safety Engineering in Defence or a similar complex environment

  • Familiarity with safety standards like MIL-STD-882E and a solid understanding of the Systems Engineering lifecycle

  • Proven ability to analyse technical risks and produce clear, high-quality safety documentation

  • Knowledge of safety and risk management frameworks

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work cross-functionally

  • Eligibility for or possession of an Australian NV-1 security clearance and ability to work with Export Controlled material 

Bonus points for:

  • Experience with Model-Based Systems Development (MBSD)

  • A track record of working effectively with diverse stakeholder groups
