About the Team

Technical Services at UTS support teaching, research, and operational excellence across disciplines. Dedicated technical teams manage laboratories, fieldwork logistics, and specialist facilities, while overseeing procurement, asset management, and compliance with safety protocols. They play a strategic role in enabling high-quality education and research through infrastructure support, risk management, and collaboration with internal stakeholders.

Within the Faculty of Science, Technical Services provides dedicated support for teaching and research laboratories, fieldwork operations, and specialist facilities. Teams support safe and reliable delivery of practical teaching and research activity through local operational readiness, equipment support, and compliance with University WHS requirements and relevant regulatory obligations.

About the Role

The Senior Technical Services Officer provides senior hands-on technical support and specialist expertise to enable safe, reliable and high-quality teaching, research and (where applicable) external engagement activities across assigned laboratory, fieldwork and/or specialist facility areas. The role is responsible for advanced troubleshooting, maintenance and coordination of specialised equipment and facilities, and for ensuring laboratory/field readiness through effective preparation, documentation and local process control.

The role supports staff and student capability through instruction, coaching and competency-based guidance, contributes to continuous improvement of technical methods and service delivery, and ensures work is conducted in accordance with University WHS requirements and local procedures.

If successful in applying for this role, you will be responsible for: 

  • Delivering high quality hands on technical support for assigned laboratory/fieldwork/specialist areas; maintain readiness (set up, pack down, turnaround) and provide in session support for complex teaching/research activities as required
  • Maintaining, troubleshooting and coordinating servicing/calibration of specialised equipment and instrumentation to ensure operational readiness and minimise downtime.
  • Supporting practical class delivery by preparing equipment/materials and coordinating technical requirements with academic staff.
  • Delivering technical advice, inductions and training to students and staff on specialist equipment, procedures and safe work practices.
  • Ensuring compliance with WHS requirements, including risk assessments, SOPs, inspections, hazardous material handling and safety documentation.
  • Providing day-to-day guidance and mentoring to technical staff, contribute to workflow improvements and support project-based technical initiatives as required.

With examples, please outline in a separate document, how you meet the following key selection criteria:
  1. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage professionally with academic staff, students, and external stakeholders.
  2. Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary and high performing teams.
  3. Broad and deep understanding of laboratory operations, including high volume teaching service as well as research operations, scientific procedures, and use of specialised equipment used across the Physics, Chemistry & Forensics disciplines.
  4. Extensive experience of working in chemical-intensive laboratory environments and/or supporting higher-risk activities (e.g., laser laboratories where applicable), including implementing local controls, training/competency support and safe work practices.

Remuneration & Benefits

Base Salary Range: $98,792 - $106,966 pa (HEW 6)


This role attracts 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary.

This position is full-time and appointment will be made on a continuing basis.
