About the program:

AIR6500 is the RAAF’s $3 billion program to develop a joint air battle management system that builds on the capabilities offered by Next Generation sensor and command and control systems. AIR6500 will create a fully networked ‘system of systems’ that synchronises air and missile defence operations in joint and coalition environments, maximising situational awareness and enhancing the speed of decision making across the battlespace.

We are seeking an experienced Systems Engineer to join a major Australian Defence program (AIR6500). In this role, you will work across complex system-of-systems environments, driving requirements decomposition, system design, and model-based engineering outcomes. You will collaborate with internal teams and external partners to deliver high-impact technical solutions in a mission-critical defence capability.

Key responsibilities

• Decompose and define system and subsystem requirements within a Model Based Engineering (MBE) environment
• Develop and manage key interface definitions across complex systems
• Conduct design trade-off analysis aligned to system requirements
• Produce technical artefacts including solution descriptions, requirements and trade studies
• Contribute to system verification & validation activities across a system-of-systems
• Collaborate with SMEs and partner organisations to support program delivery and reviews

You are an experienced Systems Engineer with over 5 years of post-qualification experience working on complex programs. You thrive in collaborative environments and bring strong analytical thinking, with the ability to navigate ambiguity and solve challenging engineering problems.

Essential

• Strong experience in one or more C4ISREW domains (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance, Electronic Warfare)
• Solid understanding of Model Based Systems Development (MBSD) / Model Based Engineering (MBE) principles
• Experience using modelling tools such as MagicDraw, Rhapsody, or similar
• Proven experience developing system designs and verification plans for complex systems
• Degree in Engineering or equivalent relevant experience
• Australian NV1 security clearance and ability to access Export Controlled material

Desirable

• Experience in verification and validation within complex Australian Defence programs
• Exposure to frameworks such as DoDAF or SysML
