About the Role
Looking for a Senior Environmental Health Officer role with variety, autonomy and the chance to make a visible impact in a close-knit community?
We are seeking an experienced Senior Environmental Health Officer to join our Building and Environmental Health team, reporting to the Manager Building and Environmental Health. This role is available on a full-time or part-time basis, so we are open to discussing an arrangement that works for the right person.
This is a hands-on senior role where you will work across the full range of environmental and public health services, from inspections, investigations and statutory compliance through to community education, technical advice and service improvement.
You will play a key role in managing complex matters, supporting consistent and practical regulatory outcomes, and helping the team deliver a responsive, high-quality service to our community.
Key responsibilities include:
Investigating and resolving environmental and public health complaints, including complex or sensitive matters.
Undertaking inspections, assessments and compliance activities across food, public health, environmental protection and local law matters.
Providing clear, practical technical advice to residents, businesses, colleagues and external agencies.
Preparing correspondence, notices, reports, briefing notes and recommendations.
Supporting environmental health programs, community education initiatives and service improvements.
Guiding and mentoring other officers to support confident, consistent and customer-focused service delivery.
What you’ll bring
In your covering letter, we’d love to hear about your experience in the following areas:
Relevant Environmental Health qualifications and eligibility for appointment as an Environmental Health Officer in Western Australia, as approved by the Chief Health Officer under section 18 of the Public Health Act 2016.
Eligibility for appointment as an authorised person and inspector under sections 87 and 88 of the Environmental Protection Act 1986.
Experience across environmental health, ideally within local government, including inspections, investigations, compliance and community education.
Strong working knowledge of WA public health, food, environmental protection, local government and local law requirements.
Confidence investigating complex matters, assessing risk and applying sound judgement in a regulatory environment.
Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical matters in a practical way.
Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities with limited supervision.
A collaborative approach, with the ability to guide, support or mentor other officers.
Current C Class Driver’s Licence.
Eligibility for appointment as an Authorised Noise Officer, or the ability to obtain appointment within a reasonable timeframe, will be highly regarded.
