Position Title: Landscaper
Reports to: Manager Civil and Waste Services
Location: West Daly Region, NT
Full-Time Position $79,000 – $84,000 per annum
The Landscaper is responsible for the planning, establishment, and maintenance of parks, gardens, sporting ovals, and public open spaces within West Daly Regional Council communities. The role contributes to creating safe, attractive, and sustainable outdoor environments that enhance the liveability and wellbeing of community members, while ensuring works are delivered efficiently, cost-effectively, and in line with Council’s policies and environmental standards.
DUTIES
Primary Tasks
• Undertake gardening, landscaping, and grounds maintenance tasks including mowing, planting, pruning, weeding, mulching, and irrigation.
• Establish and maintain new gardens, parks, and public open spaces to agreed standards.
• Install and maintain turf, garden beds, trees, and shrubs suitable for the Northern Territory climate.
• Operate and maintain landscaping equipment such as mowers, whipper snippers, chainsaws, and
irrigation systems.
• Assist in the upkeep of playgrounds, park furniture, pathways, and fencing.
• Monitor irrigation systems and water supplies to ensure efficient usage.
• Report defects, hazards, and maintenance needs to the Supervisor.
• Ensure proper disposal of green waste and encourage sustainable practices.
• Work collaboratively with Council staff, contractors, and community members to deliver projects.
• Provide support and guidance to seasonal staff and trainees where applicable.
• Propagating and planting trees, bushes, hedges, flowers, and bulbs.
• Preparing lawn areas by spreading topsoil and planting grass, and by laying instant turf.
• Maintaining planted and grassed areas by weeding, trimming, fertilising, watering, and mowing.
• Pruning trees and hedges, and installing plant support and protection devices.
• Examining trees to assess their condition and determine treatment.
• Lopping limbs off trees and shaping branches using chainsaws and handsaws.
• Preparing plans and drawings, selecting materials and plants, and scheduling landscape construction
• Any other reasonable duties delegated by the Manager which are within the level.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Essential
• Bachelor's degree and/or significant experience as a landscaper.
• Demonstrated experience in landscaping, horticulture, or grounds maintenance.
• Knowledge of plants, turf, and landscaping practices suitable for remote NT environments.
• Ability to operate and maintain a range of horticultural and landscaping equipment.
• Awareness of safe work practices, WHS, and environmental standards.
• Good communication skills and ability to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• National Police Clearance.
• Current Class C Driver’s Licence.
• NT Ochre Card (Working with Children Clearance).
Desirable
• Chemical handling and weed management certification.
• Chainsaw operation ticket.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
• A great aptitude and attitude to learn.
• A self-motivation, drive, and initiative to learn, decode problems, and perform duties would be beneficial.
• Capabilities to understand technical directions, reports, and engineering drawings.
• Excellent organisational skills with the ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
• Sound computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office, Word, and Excel.
• Demonstrated high-level interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders, both internal and external.
• Basic understanding of contract management, project management, asset engineering, asset management, business and financial planning principles and practices
• Decision-making skills with an analytical and innovative approach to problem-solving.
• Understand the cultural and social sensitivities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
