The Organisation:

Northern Territory Consumer Affairs regulates business conduct and protects consumer interests by:

  • Promoting the rights and responsibilities of consumers and traders, tenants and landlords

  • Educating consumers, traders and industry on their rights and responsibilities and changes to the law 

  • Providing an independent, fair and accessible conciliation service to help resolve disputes between consumers and traders

  • Ensuring compliance with the legislation we administer and undertaking enforcement action when necessary.

We administer several pieces of legislation, including the Consumer Affairs and Fair Trading Act 1990 and the Residential Tenancies Act 1999.  We are a co-regulator of the Australian Consumer Law. The Fair Trading Officer:

This position works in a small team under the supervision of the Manager Client Services to provide information on the legislation we administer to members of the public via telephone through a call centre, and in-person at our Casuarina office. For example:

  • Explaining to a tenant what their rights are if the landlord hasn’t returned their security deposit

  • Telling a consumer what they can do if they purchased a product that is faulty. 

Fair Trading Officers also manage a caseload of conciliation matters, in which they try to resolve individual disputes between a consumer and business. They may also perform other educational activities, such as visiting businesses to explain their obligations under the Australian Consumer Law, or by representing Consumer Affairs and providing information to the public at an expo.

We are looking for a reliable and motivated individual who can understand and explain legislation, has experience in a busy client service environment, and great communication skills to inform people and resolve disputes.  The successful person will work well independently and as a team member and be committed to delivering quality services to the community.
