This includes more than 160 projects with farmers, plantation managers, agribusiness, and Indigenous groups on carbon farming projects. Climate Friendly has delivered over 20Mt in carbon abatement as at the end of 2020. The roleAs a core member of Climate Friendly’s Legal and Governance Hub, you’ll play a pivotal role in supporting our Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL) obligations, shaping compliance systems, and advising on high-value carbon credit transactions. You’ll join a dynamic in-house legal team operating at the intersection of financial services, environmental markets, and regulatory change—delivering work with real-world impact. We’re looking for a commercially minded lawyer with strong financial services or regulatory experience who thrives in a collaborative, purpose-led environment. If you’re excited by the challenge of working across emerging markets, complex compliance frameworks, and meaningful environmental outcomes, we’d love to hear from you. Key responsibilities include:Leading and supporting compliance with our AFSL, AML/CTF, anti-financial crime, and related regulatory obligations, including client onboarding, KYC, training, and audit readinessAdvising on and maintaining compliance systems across the organisation, including regulatory reporting, breach management, and remediationDrafting, negotiating, and reviewing a wide range of commercial agreements related to the sale and purchase of carbon credits (ACCUs) and other revenue-generating transactionsAdvising on regulatory engagement and correspondence (e.g. ASIC, AUSTRAC, CER), and managing external counsel where requiredPreparing corporate risk assessments, including ML/TF, anti-bribery and corruption, and algorithmic integrity, and helping translate these into improved internal systemsMonitoring developments in financial services, environmental law, and carbon markets; coordinating proactive responses to regulatory reforms and consultationsProviding strategic and day-to-day legal support across a wide variety of areas including financial services regulation, carbon trading, carbon farming, nature repair, IP, and corporate governanceSupporting internal investigations, dispute resolution, and risk mitigation strategies across the organisationEnhancing our legal operations with tools, templates, clause libraries, and systems to improve workflows, visibility, and team efficiency About you Tertiary qualification in law in Australia and current practicing certificate.A minimum of 2 years post-qualification experience in private practice / in-house (either in carbon or other financial services business).Experience in managing financial services compliance and/or the provision of financial services.Experience in drafting and negotiating commercial agreements.Excellent legal and problem-solving skills.
