Position: Heavy Diesel Motor Mechanic

Classification: Level 7 as per West Daly Regional Council Enterprise Agreement 2024

Location: West Daly Region

Reports to: Workshop Manager

Full-time Position $97,000 - $102,000 per year

The purpose of this position is to provide trade-qualified, high-quality, efficient, and effective heavy diesel mechanical services within the West Daly Regional Council community. The role focuses on the maintenance and repair of the Council’s heavy vehicles, diesel engines, earthmoving machinery, plant, and equipment to support the operation, safety, and reliability of West Daly Regional Council’s fleet and equipment.

DUTIES

Primary Tasks

  • Carry out high-quality repairs, servicing, and preventative maintenance on heavy diesel vehicles, earthmoving equipment, generators, and other plant.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair complex diesel engine, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems.
  • Assist with developing and implementing preventative maintenance schedules for Council’s fleet and plant.
  • Undertake transportation and recovery of heavy vehicles and equipment as required.
  • Advise the Workshop Manager and Community Services Manager of major maintenance issues, risks, or misuse/damage of equipment.
  • Maintain accurate service, maintenance, and repair records, including job cards and stock control.
  • Prepare requisitions for spare parts, lubricants, and consumables within approved budgets.
  • Ensure the workshop, tools, and equipment are maintained in a clean, safe, and operational condition.
  • Receive, store, and secure parts and workshop supplies.
  • Ensure workshop security is maintained when unattended.
  • Perform other duties commensurate with skills and experience as directed by the Workshop Manager.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of heavy diesel engine systems and proven competency in repairing large vehicles, earthmoving machinery, and generators.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve complex mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical faults.
  • Sound knowledge of Workplace Health &Safety requirements.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong record-keeping and organisational skills.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work with culturally diverse communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work to deadlines and manage workloads effectively.

 

Qualifications & Other Requirements

  • Trade Certificate in Heavy Diesel Motor Mechanics (or equivalent qualification).
  • Relevant experience in a heavy diesel workshop or field service environment.
  • Medium or Heavy Rigid licence (essential).
  • Tickets to operate heavy machinery (highly regarded).
  • Authorised Vehicle Inspector (or ability to obtain).
  • Construction Induction (White Card).
  • Current National Criminal History Check.
  • Current NT Driver’s Licence.
  • Working with Children (Ochre) Card.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and maintenance systems (desirable).
