Position Summary

The Mechanical Engineering Technician provides technical support across the company’s manufacturing operations, with a focus on the installation, testing, maintenance and improvement of mechanical equipment and production machinery.

The position works closely with engineering and production personnel to ensure machinery and mechanical systems operate safely, efficiently and in accordance with technical specifications and production requirements.

Task & responsibilities

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare and update mechanical drawings, equipment layouts and technical documentation for manufacturing machinery, plant and mechanical components. 
  • Assist with the design, modification and improvement of mechanical equipment and production systems used within the polyurethane manufacturing process. 
  • Assist with the selection of appropriate mechanical components, tools and equipment for machinery installations, modifications and maintenance activities. 
  • Assemble, install, test and commission new or modified mechanical components, machinery and associated hydraulic and pneumatic systems. 
  • Inspect and test production machinery and mechanical systems to identify faults, performance issues and maintenance requirements. 
  • Investigate mechanical faults and assist with troubleshooting equipment breakdowns to minimise production interruptions. 
  • Collect and analyse equipment performance and operational data and prepare technical records and reports to support machinery improvements and maintenance decisions. 
  • Assist with determining material, component and equipment requirements for mechanical repairs, modifications and engineering projects. 
  • Coordinate and undertake scheduled inspections and preventive maintenance of production machinery and associated mechanical equipment. 
  • Check completed installations, repairs and modifications against technical drawings, equipment specifications, safety requirements and applicable standards. 
  • Liaise with engineering, production and maintenance personnel regarding equipment performance, technical issues and proposed machinery improvements. 
  • Maintain accurate technical records relating to equipment inspections, testing, maintenance, modifications and repairs. 
  • Assist in implementing improvements to machinery reliability, production efficiency and workplace safety. 


Qualification & experience

Qualifications and Experience

  • Diploma or higher qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology or a closely related discipline, or relevant equivalent experience where applicable. 
  • Relevant practical experience of  one year within a manufacturing, engineering or industrial environment. 
  • Experience working with mechanical machinery, production equipment and associated mechanical systems. 
  • Experience in equipment installation, testing, troubleshooting and preventive maintenance will be highly regarded. 
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, equipment specifications and technical documentation. 
  • Practical understanding of mechanical components and hydraulic and pneumatic systems. 

Skills and Capabilities

  • Strong mechanical and technical problem-solving skills. 
  • Ability to identify mechanical faults and assist in developing practical solutions. 
  • Ability to analyse equipment performance and technical information. 
  • Good organisational and technical documentation skills. 
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality. 
  • Ability to work effectively with engineering, production and maintenance teams. 
  • Sound understanding of workplace health and safety requirements within a manufacturing environment.
