Task & responsibilities

The Dental Assistant will be responsible for:

  • Assisting dentists and other dental practitioners during examinations, treatments and dental procedures.
  • Preparing treatment rooms, dental instruments, materials and equipment before procedures.
  • Providing chairside assistance, including passing instruments and materials to the dentist during treatment.
  • Operating suction equipment and assisting with maintaining a clear and safe treatment area during dental procedures.
  • Preparing dental materials and equipment as required for individual treatments.
  • Cleaning, disinfecting, sterilising and storing dental instruments and equipment in accordance with infection prevention and control requirements.
  • Following appropriate infection control, hygiene, workplace health and safety and clinical protocols.
  • Preparing treatment rooms between patients and ensuring clinical areas are maintained to a high standard of cleanliness and readiness.
  • Assisting with dental radiography procedures where appropriately trained and authorised.
  • Supporting patients before, during and following treatment and helping them feel comfortable within the clinical environment.
  • Providing patients with post-treatment and oral hygiene information as directed by the treating dental practitioner.
  • Maintaining accurate patient records and updating relevant clinical and administrative information.
  • Monitoring and maintaining stocks of dental materials, instruments and clinical supplies and advising when replenishment is required.
  • Receiving, checking and appropriately storing dental supplies and materials.
  • Assisting with laboratory-related tasks, impressions, models and other clinical preparation where required and within the scope of the position.
  • Managing clinical waste and sharps in accordance with applicable practice procedures and safety requirements.
  • Communicating effectively with dentists, patients, laboratories, suppliers and other members of the dental team.
  • Assisting with patient appointments, enquiries and general practice administration when required.
  • Maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality at all times.
  • Contributing to the smooth and efficient day-to-day operation of the dental practice.

Qualification & experience

The successful candidate should ideally possess:

  • A relevant qualification in Dental Assisting, such as Certificate III in Dental Assisting, preferred but not necessary.  
  • Previous at least one year experience working as a Dental Assistant in a dental practice or comparable clinical environment.
  • Practical experience providing chairside assistance to dental practitioners.
  • Knowledge and practical understanding of dental infection prevention and control procedures.
  • Experience with cleaning, sterilisation and maintenance of dental instruments and equipment.
  • Familiarity with dental terminology, instruments, materials and common dental procedures.
  • Experience maintaining patient records and working with dental practice systems would be advantageous.
  • Dental radiography experience and/or relevant radiography qualifications would be advantageous but are not essential unless required for the particular duties of the position.
