The Telecommunications Field Engineer plans, designs, tests, and monitors telecommunications networks and equipment. This role involves analysing system data to resolve technical network faults and ensuring the telecommunications infrastructure operates efficiently. The position also requires providing technical advice to internal teams and clients to maintain system performance and reliability.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the setup and integration of network equipment.
  • Monitor the performance and stability of telecommunications networks.
  • Ensure network designs comply with industry standards and safety regulations.
  • Coordinate with project managers to meet delivery timelines.
  • Evaluate network data to identify areas for system improvement.
  • Oversee the technical compliance of network installations.
  • Maintain accurate records of system configurations and network changes.
  • Provide technical support to resolve complex network faults.

    Main Tasks
  • Design telecommunications networks using industry software.
  • Test network hardware and software before final installation.
  • Measure signal strength and adjust network equipment to improve coverage.
  • Program routers, switches, and other network devices.
  • Run diagnostic tests to find the cause of network failures.
  • Replace faulty network hardware components.
  • Update network software and firmware to the latest versions.
  • Document technical faults and the specific steps taken to fix them.
  • Set up remote access protocols for system monitoring.
  • Explain technical system operations to clients and staff members.

    Relevant Qualifications

    This position requires an AQF Advanced Diploma or Diploma in Telecommunications Engineering, Computer Systems, or a related technical field. At least three years of relevant industry experience may substitute for the formal qualification. In some instances, relevant experience and on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification.

    Relevant Skills

    Knowledge of telecommunications network structures and systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical diagrams and blueprints.
  • Proficiency with network diagnostic and testing equipment.
  • Analytical skills for finding solutions to technical problems.
  • Understanding of internet protocols, routing, and switching.
  • Written communication skills for creating technical reports.
  • Time management skills to complete project phases on schedule.
  • Ability to configure different software and hardware systems.
