Task & responsibilities

  • Collects Goods from a Collection Point for Delivery

The delivery driver is responsible for picking up goods from warehouses, stores, or designated collection points. This involves verifying the accuracy of items against loading documents, ensuring that the correct items are collected, and that they are undamaged and ready for transport.

  • Plans Delivery Routes to Ensure Efficient and Timely Delivery of Goods to the Destination

Utilising GPS systems or route-planning software, the driver evaluates traffic conditions, delivery timeframes, and geographic locations to determine the most efficient and cost-effective routes. This planning helps to ensure timely deliveries and optimise fuel usage and vehicle wear.

  • Organises Items for Delivery According to Delivery Routes

Before departure, the driver organises goods in the delivery vehicle based on the scheduled order of deliveries. This ensures smooth access to each package, reduces unloading time, and minimises the risk of damage during transit.

  • Loads and Unloads Items for Delivery in a Safe and Secure Manner

The driver is responsible for loading goods into the vehicle using appropriate manual handling techniques or mechanical aids. Items must be secured to prevent movement or damage during transit. Upon arrival at each destination, the driver unloads the goods and ensures they are handed over to the appropriate recipient.

  • Receives Certification of Delivery and Completes Delivery Logs and Records

Each delivery must be documented. The driver obtains customer signatures or digital confirmation to verify successful delivery. Delivery logs, manifests, or electronic tracking systems must be updated to reflect delivery status, time, and any customer remarks or issues.

  • Returns Undelivered Items to the Appropriate Location

If delivery is unsuccessful (e.g., recipient not available or address incorrect), the driver follows protocol for returning the goods to the warehouse or depot. This includes documenting the reason for non-delivery and notifying the relevant supervisor or dispatch team.

  • Performs Routine Maintenance and Inspections on the Delivery Vehicle to Ensure Safe and Efficient Operation

Before and after each shift, the driver checks vehicle components such as tyres, lights, brakes, fluid levels, and mirrors. Any defects must be reported immediately. The driver may also be responsible for basic maintenance tasks such as cleaning, refuelling, and topping up oil or washer fluids.

  • May Receive and Process Payments for Deliveries

In cases where goods are delivered cash-on-delivery (COD), the driver handles monetary transactions using approved methods (cash, card reader, or mobile app). Accurate records must be kept, and payments must be reconciled with the finance or dispatch team.

  • Manoeuvring Vehicles into Position for Loading and Unloading

The driver safely positions the vehicle in loading bays, driveways, or tight access points to facilitate loading or unloading. This includes reversing, using hazard signals, and complying with site safety protocols to avoid damage or injury.

  • Verifying Loading Documents

Prior to departure, the driver cross-checks loading slips, invoices, or digital manifests to ensure all items are accounted for. This includes verifying quantities, destinations, and special delivery instructions, ensuring no discrepancies between the manifest and actual load.

Qualification & experience

  • Hold a valid Australian Heavy Vehicle Driver Licence (Class HR, HC, or MC depending on the truck type) or equivalent overseas license recognized in Australia.
  • Completion of relevant training in truck driving and road safety is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with load securing, vehicle inspection procedures, and compliance with transport regulations.
  • Demonstrated safe driving record and understanding of road safety and WHS principles.
  • minimum at least 1 or 2 years experience
