Task & responsibilities
The Cook will be responsible for:
- Examining foodstuffs to ensure quality, freshness, and suitability for preparation and serving.
- Checking food quality when receiving goods and during preparation, cooking, and service.
- Regulating temperatures of ovens, grills, fryers, and other cooking equipment.
- Preparing, seasoning, and cooking food using a range of cooking methods and techniques.
- Portioning food, plating meals, and adding sauces, gravies, and garnishes.
- Storing food in temperature-controlled facilities in accordance with food safety requirements.
- Preparing meals to meet special dietary requirements and customer needs.
- Planning menu items and estimating food requirements as required.
- Assisting with stock control, food ordering, and minimising food wastage.
- Cleaning food preparation areas and following proper hygiene and cleaning procedures.
- Safely using kitchen equipment and following occupational health and safety procedures.
- Identifying and resolving issues during food preparation and service.
- Communicating with kitchen and front-of-house staff about food quality, hygiene, safety, and customer requirements.
- Working effectively with other kitchen staff in a fast-paced environment.
- Applying relevant Australian food safety standards, hygiene regulations, and workplace safety procedures.
Qualification & experience
The successful applicant should have:
Preferred:
- AQF Certificate III in Commercial Cookery, including relevant on-the-job training, or AQF Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery.
- Relevant experience as a Cook in a dining, restaurant, café, catering, or commercial kitchen environment.
- Strong knowledge of food preparation, cooking techniques, and plating standards.
- Ability to prepare, season, cook, and present meals to a consistent standard.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Flexibility to work rostered shifts, including weekends and public holidays if required.
