The Chef is responsible for preparing high‑quality dishes with consistency, efficiency, and attention to detail. This role supports the smooth daily operation of the kitchen, maintains food safety standards, and contributes to menu development that reflects Bullrun Café’s signature style and customer expectations.

Task & responsibilities

  • Food Preparation & Cooking
    • Prepare and cook breakfast, brunch, and lunch dishes to recipe specifications.
    • Maintain consistency in taste, presentation, and portion control.
    • Manage multiple dockets during peak service with speed and accuracy.
  • Menu Execution & Development
    • Assist in refining existing menu items and contributing new ideas aligned with café trends.
    • Ensure all dishes meet Bullrun Café’s quality standards.
  • Kitchen Operations
    • Set up and break down the kitchen each day, ensuring all stations are stocked and organised.
    • Monitor inventory levels and communicate ordering needs to management.
    • Minimise food waste through proper storage, rotation, and portioning.
  • Food Safety & Compliance
    • Follow all food handling, hygiene, and safety regulations in accordance with Australian standards.
    • Maintain a clean, sanitised workspace and ensure equipment is used safely.
  • Teamwork & Communication
    • Work collaboratively with kitchen and front‑of‑house teams to ensure smooth service.
    • Train junior staff in kitchen procedures, recipes, and safe work practices.
    • Communicate effectively during service to manage timing and workflow.

Qualification & experience

  • Certificate III or IV in Commercial Cookery (or equivalent experience).
  • Proven experience in a fast‑paced café or restaurant kitchen.
  • Strong understanding of breakfast and brunch service.
  • Ability to manage time, multitask, and stay calm under pressure.
  • Knowledge of food safety standards (Food Safety Supervisor certification preferred).
  • Creativity and passion for high‑quality, modern café cuisine.
  • Reliable, punctual, and committed to consistency.
  • Positive attitude with a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Attention to detail in both flavour and presentation.
  • Adaptable and open to feedback.
