The Carpenter is responsible for constructing, installing, repairing, and modifying timber structures, cabinetry, and fittings in caravans, motorhomes, and RVs. The role involves custom cabinetry, benchtops, bed platforms, storage solutions, wall and floor panels, and exterior timber repairs. Precision, problem-solving skills, and the ability to interpret technical drawings are required to deliver high-quality finishes that meet ADR and RV industry standards.

Task & responsibilities

Duties:

  • Study and interpret technical drawings, customer specifications, manufacturer fitout plans, and RV structural diagrams to determine materials, dimensions, joinery methods, and installation procedures.
  • Order, select, and prepare timber, plywood, composite panels, laminate, and other materials suitable for RV construction.
  • Cut, shape, join, and assemble timber and composite materials using hand tools, power tools, saws, routers, jigsaws, and pneumatic nail guns to fabricate cabinetry, benchtops, storage units, bed platforms, cupboards, and internal fittings.
  • Construct, install, and fit internal wall panelling, ceiling linings, bulkheads, and partitions, ensuring correct alignment, squareness, and structural integrity.
  • Install timber or composite flooring, sub-flooring, floor joists, and floor coverings, verifying levelness and secure fixing to chassis and floor frames.
  • Fabricate and install external wall cladding, exterior panelling, and door/window frames, ensuring weatherproofing and compliance with ADR structural requirements.
  • Repair and replace damaged timber structures, cabinetry, wall panels, flooring, and fixtures affected by water damage, accidents, or structural deterioration.
  • Fit and install hardware, hinges, drawer runners, door catches, locks, handles, and trim to cabinets, cupboards, doors, and storage units.
  • Work collaboratively with auto electricians, mechanics, and panel beaters to coordinate carpentry work with electrical installations, plumbing, appliances, and structural repairs.
  • Maintain hand tools, power tools, and workshop equipment; follow safe work practices; complete accurate job cards and timesheets.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure all carpentry work meets quality, accuracy, structural integrity, ADR, Australian Standards, and RV industry best practices.
  • Maintain safe work practices in the workshop, including safe use of power tools, handling of materials, and compliance with WHS regulations.
  • Take responsibility for the quality and finish of all timber structures, cabinetry, and fittings, ensuring customer specifications are met.
  • Communicate with the Workshop Manager, technicians, and customers regarding progress, material requirements, design variations, and issues.
  • Participate in ongoing skills development and training to maintain competency in RV construction techniques, composite materials, adhesives, and customer fitout trends.

Qualification & experience

  • Trade qualification in Carpentry or equivalent qualification; OR at least three (3) years of relevant full-time experience may substitute for the formal qualifications
  • Minimum three (3) years of full-time relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrated practical skills in hand tools and power tools, including saws, routers, drills, planers, sanders, nail guns, and measuring equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, architectural plans, joinery specifications, and customer design briefs.
  • Knowledge of timber construction methods, joinery techniques, material selection, and finishing standards.
  • Strong attention to detail, precision measurement skills, and ability to produce high-quality finishes.
  • Current driver’s licence (car minimum; LR desirable).
  • Understanding of Australian WHS obligations and safe carpentry workshop practices.
  • Experience fabricating and installing custom cabinetry, benchtops, and storage solutions in confined or mobile environments.
  • Familiarity with composite materials, laminates, adhesives, and lightweight construction methods for RVs.
  • Experience repairing water-damaged timber structures or replacing rotted/delaminated panelling.
  • Knowledge of ADR for recreational vehicles and road-registered trailers.
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary technical team.
