Our team

The National Seabed Mapping Section (NSM) is responsible for producing and managing foundational seabed data products to support government priorities, including the Resourcing Australia’s Prosperity initiative, and is part of the Oceans, Reefs, Coasts and the Antarctic Branch (ORCA) in the Place and Communities Division of Geoscience Australia (GA). The NSM section also leads the collaborative AusSeabed initiative, which aims to improve the coverage, quality, accessibility and usability of seabed bathymetry mapping products in the Australian region through coordination, collaboration, and innovation.

The role

The bathymetric geoscientist role will apply hydrographic, geoscience and data management expertise to seabed mapping activities that inform sustainable management of Australia’s marine jurisdiction.

In this role you will:

• Apply bathymetric geoscience specialist knowledge and expertise to create integrated bathymetric-topographic surfaces, including assessing, processing, and managing source data;
• Work with colleagues to develop seabed mapping proposals with partner organisations;
• Work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary hydrographic and marine geoscience team focused on developing a 35-year program of seabed mapping, including developing new processes;
• Provide objective and timely advice on hydrography and marine geoscience issues to government, GA senior management and other organisations as required;
• Represent and promote Geoscience Australia's interests at national meetings and forums;
• Apply and contribute to the development of standard operating procedures;
• Contribute as a proactive and inclusive member of the section, including providing peer review of hydrographic and marine geoscience work by colleagues and setting priorities and workplans in your area of expertise.

Required skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualifications

• Relevant university qualifications and/or experience in hydrography, marine geoscience (e.g. bathymetry, geomorphology, or equivalent) or spatial science
• Proficiency in industry-standard hydrographic processing software (e.g. Caris HIPS & SIPS or QPS Qimera) OR proficiency in industry-standard GIS software (e.g. ArcGIS).
• Knowledge of spatial data analysis techniques, scripting and automation (e.g. Python) is highly desirable.
