Qualifications and Experience

AQF Certificate III in Carpentry, including relevant on-the-job training, or AQF Certificate IV in a relevant field.

At least three years of relevant experience may substitute for formal qualifications, where applicable.

Demonstrated experience in residential construction, timber framing, flooring, and installation of doors, windows, and fittings.

Ability to interpret construction drawings, architectural plans, and technical specifications.

Knowledge of carpentry tools, construction materials, workplace safety, and relevant building requirements.

Detailed Job Responsibilities

1. Construction Planning and Material Preparation

Interpret construction drawings and specifications to determine dimensions, materials, and installation procedures.

Measure, mark, cut, and shape timber, plywood, wallboard, and other construction materials according to project requirements.

Select appropriate materials, prepare layouts, and organise supplies to ensure efficient construction and minimise wastage.

2. Structural Framing and Installation

Construct and install timber frameworks for walls, floors, roofs, and other structural components in residential buildings.

Erect roof framing, lay subflooring and floorboards, and install bracing and supports in accordance with approved plans.

Install door and window frames, fascia panels, roof sheathing, and external wall cladding.

Check structural alignment, levels, measurements, and fixings to ensure accuracy and stability.

3. Internal Fit-Out and Finishing

Assemble and install timber fixtures, skirting boards, architraves, mouldings, shelving, and other carpentry components.

Cut and fit timber joints and adjust components to achieve accurate measurements and quality finishes.

Work with plywood, wallboard, plastic laminates, and other suitable materials for interior fittings.

Ensure completed installations meet project specifications and the required standards of workmanship.

4. Custom Homes, Renovations and Repairs

Undertake carpentry work for custom homes, single-storey and double-storey residences, granny flats, and knockdown rebuild projects.

Repair, renovate, and replace damaged or deteriorated timber structures, flooring, doors, windows, and other fittings.

Construct and install components to suit project-specific architectural designs and residential building requirements.

Coordinate carpentry activities with site supervisors and other trades to ensure timely project completion.

5. Quality Control and Site Coordination

Inspect materials and completed carpentry work to identify defects and ensure compliance with construction drawings and specifications.

Maintain and operate carpentry tools and equipment safely and ensure materials are stored appropriately.

Coordinate material requirements and work schedules with site supervisors to minimise delays and improve efficiency.

Follow workplace health and safety procedures and comply with applicable building standards and construction requirements.
