About the Role

Steelbot is seeking an experienced and skilled Welder (First Class) to join its team in Wallan, Victoria.

The successful applicant will be responsible for carrying out welding, fabrication, assembly and repair of metal components in accordance with drawings, specifications and required quality standards.

This is a hands-on role suited to an experienced welder who can work confidently with different metals, welding processes, fabrication equipment and workshop machinery while maintaining a high standard of workmanship and workplace safety.

Key Responsibilities

• Studying drawings, blueprints and specifications to determine job requirements.
• Selecting, cleaning and preparing metal stock for fabrication.
• Marking out, cutting and preparing metal sections and components.
• Cutting metal using hand tools, cutting equipment and fabrication machinery.
• Shaping and bending metal sections and pipes using hand and machine tools.
• Aligning components using measuring instruments, clamps and hand tools.
• Joining metal components using appropriate welding techniques, bolting and riveting.
• Performing MIG, TIG, MMAW and gas welding where required.
• Welding mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium and other relevant materials.
• Examining welds for penetration, bead width, alignment and overall quality.
• Grinding, filing, cleaning and smoothing completed welds.
• Fabricating and assembling metal components according to technical drawings and specifications.
• Repairing damaged or defective metal components where required.
• Inspecting completed fabrication work to ensure accuracy and quality.
• Operating welding and fabrication tools and equipment safely.
• Maintaining welding equipment, tools and workshop machinery in good working condition.
• Keeping the workshop and work areas clean, organised and safe.
• Following workplace health and safety procedures and correctly using PPE.
• Working with supervisors, fabricators and other team members to complete projects efficiently and on time.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

• Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade, relevant AQF qualification, or equivalent overseas qualification.
• Minimum 1–3 years of relevant post-qualification experience as a Welder or Welder (First Class).
• Strong practical experience with MIG, TIG, MMAW and/or gas welding processes.
• Experience working with mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, fabrication drawings and welding symbols.
• Good knowledge of welding and metal fabrication tools and machinery.
• Ability to accurately measure, cut, shape, assemble and weld metal components.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
• Good understanding of workplace health and safety requirements.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Good communication and time-management skills.

Desirable

• Previous experience in a metal fabrication or engineering workshop.
• Experience with structural or custom metal fabrication.
• Experience operating workshop and metal fabrication machinery.
• Forklift licence or relevant machinery experience.
• Experience working across different types of welding and fabrication projects.
